Why go?

Kortrijk offers a manageable alternative to Belgium's more tourist-heavy cities. The city is famous as the Guldensporenstad (City of the Golden Spurs) after the pivotal 1274 battle where a Flemish peasant army defeated French knights. Medieval bell towers, beguinages, and riverside scenery provide atmosphere, while the 2010-opened K in Kortrijk shopping centre and pedestrianized streets make it a retail destination. Its proximity to Lille (France) and Ghent makes it useful as a day trip or overnight stop.

Get in

Kortrijk Railway Station is the main arrival point, offering train connections to Belgian cities and northern France. The closest airport is Flanders International Airport (Kortrijk-Wevelgem) though it serves mainly business travel with no daily passenger services. The city lies 42 km southwest of Ghent and 25 km northeast of Lille, France, making it accessible by road or rail from either country.

Traditional Flemish food is available at De Vlasblomme outside the centre.
