Overview

Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site straddling the islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar between Sumbawa and Flores. Over 150,000 foreign tourists visited in 2018 alone, a 25% increase from the previous year.

Money

Park entrance fees are Rp 315,000 weekdays and Rp 390,000 weekends (Nov 2018). Ranger fees are Rp 80,000 per group. Diving costs Rp 75,000 and snorkeling Rp 60,000 extra.

Safety

Komodo Dragons are dangerous and can run, swim, and dive faster than humans. Never explore without a ranger guide. Their venomous bite causes shock and unconsciousness.

Transport

Daily flights connect Denpasar (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ). Ferries run from Sape (Sumbawa) to Labuan Bajo, but can be suspended indefinitely due to weather.

Water

Tap water is not potable. Purchase bottled water near park headquarters or bring your own supply for treks into the island interior.

Weather

Tropical climate year-round, with extreme heat over 40°C during August-September. Best paddling season is April-November.
