Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is a 9-day Bavarian celebration in October—the largest outside Munich. Free events include the Kitchener Blues Festival (4 days, 5 stages, 60+ shows).
Food
Downtown King Street has diverse international cuisine. Kitchener Market (Sa mornings) features multicultural food court. Craft beer scene is strong with multiple breweries.
History
Originally named Berlin, renamed in 1916 during WWI. Strong Mennonite pioneer heritage. Sites include Woodside National Historic Site (PM King's boyhood home) and Joseph Schneider Home.
Language
English is the primary language. The region has significant German, Portuguese, and other immigrant communities.
Transport
GO Transit runs commuter trains to Toronto on weekdays (about 2 hours), cheaper than VIA Rail. Grand River Transit (GRT) covers the region including ION light rail.
