Why Go?

Kish Island is a free trade zone resort in the Persian Gulf, often called the Pearl of the Persian Gulf. The island offers duty-free shopping, coral beaches, and ancient ruins including Harireh (800 years old) and the Underground Town of Cariz (2,500+ years old). Unlike mainland Iran, Kish has relaxed laws while maintaining Iranian hospitality. It is about 90 km², making it compact enough to explore in a few days.

Getting In

Kish Airlines operates domestic flights from Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Mashhad to Kish International Airport. There is one weekly flight to Saudi Arabia. Ferries run from Bandar Aftab and Bandar Charak. Western flight search websites cannot find Kish flights due to sanctions—use Iran VPN or check Kish Airlines directly. Foreign nationals receive a 14-day stamp at Kish Airport without a visa, but will be photographed and fingerprinted. Entry to Kish makes travelers ineligible for US ESTA.

Getting Around

Walking is the best option for energetic travelers. Taxis without meters are plentiful—Toyota Camrys with air-conditioning. Agree on fares in advance (typical US$2-5). Check your change carefully as some drivers short-change tourists. Four taxi services operate on the island: Dalahoo (+98 764-4451577), Harireh (+98 764-4451700), Paeeze (+98 764-4451670), and Toosan (+98 764-4422400). The island is small so distances are never long.

When to Go

Most shops close from 13:00 until around 17:30 due to daytime heat, then stay open late into the night. Summer months can be extremely hot. The cooler months from October to April are more comfortable for sightseeing. Beach parks like Marjon Beach Park are free to enter and popular year-round.

Where to Stay

Kish accommodation is slightly more expensive than mainland Iran but not extortionate. Options range from villas to hotels and guesthouses. Hotel reservations typically must be made through Tehran travel agencies, which can be difficult for non-Iranian speakers. Notable hotels include the 2-star Eram Grand Hotel (kisheramhotel.com), Sunrise International Hotel with kitchenettes and two bathrooms per suite, and the increasingly run-down Maryam Hotel. The Flower of the East hotel has been under construction since 2010. Budget travelers might try Ghasedak Hotel, which caters to Chinese expats and is within walking distance to the jetty and malls.

Food and Drink

Kish offers Persian and international cuisine. Restaurants include Boof Fast Food (Kish's answer to McDonald's in Pardis II Mall), Espadana Restaurant, Papa Restaurant, Hadee's (pizzeria), Kish KFC, Asal Kish Restaurant, and Nahange Sefid (Iranian food with live music). Shandiz Safdari is expensive, serving shishlik with Iranian rice and laban. Kooh-e-Noor (5-star, Sadaf International Hotel) has a cave theme. Alcohol is not served on the island. Tea is light, good-tasting, and available everywhere. Cafe Aquarium in Pardis II Shopping Mall ground floor serves Starbucks-style coffee, Italian sandwiches, banana splits, and fresh fruit juice to a young crowd.

Things to Do

Kish has diverse attractions. The Greek Ship (historic old ship on the shore, free entry) is a major tourist spot for picnics. The Giant Bird Sculpture allows climbing inside. Dolphin and Crocodile Park (US$46 entrance) features an ocean atrium with sea mammal shows. Green Tree Park has the oldest trees on the island (free entry). Mysteries of the World Zoo charges US$5 entry. The Underground Town of Cariz is 16 metres below surface, over 2,500 years old. Ancient Harireh ruins cover 3 by 1 km with sandstone buildings estimated at 800 years old, destroyed by earthquake (free entry). Marjon Beach Park is free to enter.

Day Trips

Qeshm Island is another beautiful island reachable by boat or plane, though less tourist-friendly than Kish and primarily visited for trade. Bushehr on the mainland offers cultural and scenic attractions. These require planning through local travel agencies.

Etiquette

Women must wear headscarves and long robes covering their entire body. Clothing is provided at Kish Airport and must be returned upon departure. Show respect at ancient ruins like Harireh and Cariz. Be prepared for thorough questioning if visibly Western, and bring all verification paperwork including hotel reservations with phone numbers. Tea is a social ritual—accepting tea when offered is appreciated.

Go Next

Qeshm Island offers another perspective on Persian Gulf island life with a focus on trade. Bushehr provides mainland Iranian cultural and scenic experiences. Flights connect to Saudi Arabia weekly. Ferries run to Bandar ports on the mainland. Planning onward travel requires Persian language skills or a Tehran-based travel agency.
