Overview

Khmelnytskyi is a mid-sized Ukrainian city of roughly 290,000 in the Podillia region of Western Ukraine. Unlike nearby Ternopil, locals here do not speak Ukrainian exclusively — many use Russian as their first language or surzhyk, a mixture of both languages, so visitors can use either Ukrainian or Russian interchangeably.

Before you go

Connectivity

MTS mobile broadband offers national coverage. Dongles and SIMs available in city stores. WiFi reported at some hotels and shopping centres.

Language

Russian and Ukrainian are both widely spoken. Surzhyk, a blend of both languages, is common. Either language works for communication.

Money

Ukraine's currency is the hryvnia (грн). Credit card acceptance is limited outside major hotels and restaurants. Carry cash for taxis, local shops, and smaller establishments.

Safety

The train station area can attract dubious characters, especially at night. Get into the city promptly upon arrival. Otherwise, Khmelnytskyi is a quiet regional city with standard urban precautions.

Transport

Ride-sharing apps (Uber, Bolt, Uklon, OnTaxi) provide reliable taxi service. The train station is east of centre; buses from Kyiv arrive at the Central Bus Station.
