Overview
Kharkiv is Ukraine's second-largest city with a population of over 1.5 million, founded in 1654 at the confluence of the Lopan, Udy, and Kharkiv Rivers. The city served as Ukraine's first capital until 1934 and remains an important cultural, industrial, and educational center with 9 administrative districts.

Culture
Ukrainian is the official language, but most locals speak Russian as their first language. English is limited, mostly among young people.
Emergency
In case of air raid sirens, go to nearest shelter or basement. Metro stations, hotels, and public buildings have shelters. Carry a power bank and bottled water.
Money
Local currency is Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). Many hotels are not in international booking systems. ATMs and banks are available including PrivatBank, OTP Bank, and others.
Safety
Kharkiv faces regular missile, drone, and artillery attacks from Russian forces. Travel is not recommended. Curfew operates 23:00-05:00. Always carry your passport and proof of foreign citizenship.
Transport
Central railway station connects to Kyiv (5-10 hr), Dnipro (4½ hr), and Odesa (14 hr). Coach Station No. 1 operates 24 hr. Metro, trams, trolleybuses, and taxi apps (Uber, Bolt, Uklon) provide local transport.
Weather
Continental climate with cold winters (-6°C average in Jan-Feb, can reach -25°C) and warm summers (+20-27°C in July-August).
