Before you go

Accommodation

Most B&Bs lack car parks. Book ahead during high season and weekends. Hostels, camping, and country inns offer budget alternatives to B&Bs.

Connectivity

Full 4G coverage from UK carriers. No 5G as of early 2022.

Parking

Parking is limited on busy days. Town centre has pay-and-display car parks plus lakeside options. Some roads have free two-hour disc-parking schemes.

Transport

Trains no longer serve Keswick (axed in the 1970s). Buses from Penrith are the main public transport option, with local buses serving Lake District walking destinations.

Walking

Catbells causes more injuries than any other local fell due to inadequate footwear on smooth rocks. Wear proper hiking boots for all fell walks.

Weather

Rain is common year-round in the Lake District. Pack waterproof layers regardless of season when planning fell walks.
