Overview
Kemijärvi is the northernmost city in Finland and the only one with its city centre north of the Arctic Circle. Formerly off the beaten path, the opening of a new border crossing to Russia in nearby Salla brought more international visitors.

Hiking and winter sports are the main draw; ski resort 40 km southeast, Pyhä-Luosto National Park 50 km north.

Transport
Kemijärvi railway station is unmanned with ticket vending machine. Rovaniemi acts as the main northern railhead with better connections. Local service traffic (taxi) requires advance booking.

Located north of the Arctic Circle; expect extreme seasonal variation with polar night in winter and midnight sun in summer.
