Overview

Kelowna is the largest city in British Columbia's tourist-oriented Okanagan Valley, with about 142,000 residents in the city and 215,000 in the metropolitan area. The main draw is Okanagan Lake, a 135 km jewel perfect for boating, swimming, and kite-boarding in summer.

Three hostels downtown: Kelowna International Hostel ($25 dorm/$60 private), Kelowna Okanagan Lake Hostel ($26-84), Samesun Lodge ($27-79). Book May-Sep weekends well ahead.

Connectivity

WiFi widely available at accommodations and cafes. Major carriers (Rogers, Bell, Telus) provide 4G LTE coverage throughout the city.

Food

Budget breakfasts $5-8 at Bohemian Cafe and Mad Mango Cafe; vegetarian at Lake Tai $10-15. Upscale dining $16-40 at RauDZ and Bouchons. Wine tastings $10-25 at local wineries.

Safety

Avoid Leon & Lawrence Aves between Water and Ellis at night. Parks can be risky after dark. Summer forest fire risk; check campfire bans.

Transport

BC Transit local buses $2.50 cash fare (2022). Kelowna International Airport (YLW) has direct flights to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto. Intercity buses to Vancouver, Kamloops, Calgary.

Weather

Hot, sunny summers averaging 30°C with occasional heat waves to 35°C; mild winters thanks to Okanagan Lake's moderating effect. Best time for wine tourism is Sep-Nov harvest season.
