Why Go
Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is a small mountain town at 1,740 m elevation on the historic Georgian Military Highway, just 10 km from the Russian border. The town draws hikers and adventure travelers for its stunning views of 5,033 m Mount Kazbeg and the photogenic Gergeti Holy Trinity Church perched on a ridge against the mountain backdrop. While facilities are expanding with more guesthouses and restaurants, prices run higher than the rest of Georgia due to limited competition and tourist demand.

Get In
Marshrutkas (shared minivans) run from Tbilisi's Didube Station to Kazbegi, taking approximately 3-4 hours on the scenic Military Highway. Fares cost around 15 GEL per person (prices updated April 2025). Departures from Tbilisi are hourly from 7:00 to noon, then at 13:30, 15:30, and 18:00—but confirm current schedules as some may not operate year-round. The town is also accessible by private taxi or as part of organized day tours from Tbilisi.

Get Around
The compact town center is walkable, though streets are steep and often unpaved. For those staying up the hillside away from the river with heavy luggage, taxis are available. The Bolt ride-hailing app operates in town. Gergeti Trinity Church sits about 2 km outside the center on a ridge—allow 30-45 minutes for the hike up, or take a taxi for the return journey.

When To Go
Summer (June-September) offers the best conditions for hiking with green valleys and accessible trails. July and August bring wildflowers in the mountains. Winters are harsh with sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow that can persist into April; the town is quieter but some guesthouses may close. May brings melting snow and emerging green landscapes. The area sees increasing visitors in peak season, so book accommodation in advance for summer weekends.

Where To Stay
Kazbegi has abundant homestays and guesthouses, with enterprising local women often greeting arriving marshrutkas to offer rooms. Budget travelers can find beds at 30 GEL per person per night, or 60 GEL including dinner and breakfast. Most budget options cluster across the river from the main square—walk north 100-200 m, cross the bridge left, then turn left again after 300 m. Mid-range options like Ketino's Guesthouse offer excellent Georgian supras (feasts) with flowing wine and chacha. Luxury seekers can choose the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi with mountain views and spa facilities, though prices exceed US$150.

Food And Drink
Restaurant options in Kazbegi are limited, making guesthouse meals often the best value and quality. Anano's Guesthouse serves breakfast, dinner, and packed lunches. Ketino's Guesthouse is famous for its enormous Georgian Supra dinners with endless wine, chacha, and copious food. Lunch at Maia on Ilia Chavchavadze Street (open 15:00-22:00) serves excellent changing daily menus for approximately 100-120 GEL for three people. Cozy Corner near the square offers Georgian classics with vegetarian options and karaoke in the evenings. Shorena's hotel and bar on the main square has free Wi-Fi but expect inflated prices—chicken shish kebab at 9 GEL for just four small pieces.

Things To Do
The iconic Gergeti Holy Trinity Church (Tsminda Samebis Eklesia) towers above town at 2,170 m, offering dramatic views of Mount Kazbeg—hike 2 km up the ridge (30-45 min) or take a taxi. The Alexander Kazbegi Museum (Tu-Su 10:00-18:00) honors the writer and offers cultural insight. Adventure seekers can hike to the Gergeti Glacier at 3,000 m, attempt the 5,033 m summit of Mount Kazbeg with a guide, or explore the Juta valley by mountain bike. The Jvari Pass Travertine Natural Monument features cold sulphur springs at 2,197 m elevation, located before the Jvari Pass. The Kazbegi Marathon held annually attracts trail runners (see traillab.ge).

Day Trips
The Sno Valley is a highly recommended excursion to the peaceful villages of Sno and Juta, accessible by jeep from town (a long and bumpy ride) or on foot via the highway about 4 km from Kazbegi. B&B Iago Arabuli in Juta provides comfortable homestay accommodations for those wanting to linger. The Sno Valley makes an excellent overnight or multi-day hiking base. From town, the Russian border crossing is visible and some travelers continue overland, though proper visas and citizenship documentation are essential.

Stay Safe
Kazbegi is generally safe for travelers, though standard precautions apply. The area near the Russian border sees significant truck traffic importing and exporting goods. Medical facilities are limited—Stepantsminda Medical Centre on the main square (opposite Mountain Freaks Agency) provides essential services but English is rarely spoken. Download a translation app beforehand for emergencies. Mountain hiking carries inherent risks including altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, and unmarked trails; always inform your guesthouse of hiking plans. Winter travel requires appropriate gear and awareness of avalanche risks.

Connect
Wi-Fi is generally available throughout town, particularly at guesthouses and cafes like Shorena's hotel and bar on the main square. Mobile data coverage (4G/LTE) is good in the main town but may be limited in remote valleys and mountain areas. Consider purchasing a Georgian SIM card (Magti, Beeline, or Geocell) in Tbilisi before heading to Kazbegi for more reliable connectivity during hikes. The Bolt app works for ride-hailing within town.

Budget
Kazbegi is more expensive than other Georgian destinations. Budget travelers can manage on 100-150 GEL/day including dormitory beds (30 GEL), self-catering or guesthouse meals, and local transport. Mid-range stays with private rooms and restaurant dinners run 200-350 GEL daily. The town accepts Georgian Lari (GEL); some upscale hotels quote prices in USD but will accept local currency. Budget an extra 50-100 GEL for day trips by jeep to Sno Valley.

Go Next
Tbilisi is the main onward destination, with marshrutkas departing regularly (15 GEL/person) from the main square. The 3-4 hour journey returns to Didube Station in Tbilisi. For the adventurous, crossing into Russia via the nearby border crossing is possible but requires valid visas for both countries—Georgian citizens cannot cross and most nationalities need Russian visas arranged in advance. Sno Valley offers a peaceful contrast to the main town for those seeking deeper mountain immersion.
