Overview
Kassel (population 201,000) is the most important city in North Hesse and a cultural heavyweight: every five years it hosts Documenta, one of the world's most prestigious contemporary art exhibitions. The crown jewel is the UNESCO-listed Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, Europe's largest mountain park featuring the towering Herkules statue, cascading water features, and the Schloss Wilhelmshöhe with its world-class Old Masters gallery including Rembrandt and Rubens.
