Overview
Käsivarsi Wilderness Area occupies the "arm" of Finland in remote Lapland, offering all of the country's peaks over 1000m except nearby Saana. This is Finland's most popular wilderness area, where hikers can trek across the tripoint border with Norway and Sweden along the Nordkalottleden.

Connectivity
Mobile coverage is poor in much of the wilderness area. Try high ground for signal. WiFi unavailable in the backcountry.
Culture
The area spans traditional Sami (Sámi) territory. Respect reindeer herding activities and traditional land use.
Money
Finland uses euros (€). Most wilderness huts are free; reservation beds €11-16.50/night. Credit cards accepted at visitor centres.
Packing
Sturdy footwear, waterproof layers, good maps, compass/GPS, portable stove, and sufficient food are essential for any trek.
Safety
Mobile phone coverage is limited in the wilderness. Tell someone your plans before hiking. Help may take hours to arrive.
Transport
Daily buses connect Kilpisjärvi to Rovaniemi; summer buses from Skibotn via E6 from Norway. E8 (road 21) runs past the area.
Weather
Harsh conditions with sudden weather changes year-round. Snow possible even in summer above treeline. Polar night Nov-Jan; midnight sun May-Jul.
