Karbala is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, holding profound religious significance as the site where Prophet Muhammad's grandson Husayn was slain in the Battle of Karbala. The city attracts millions of pilgrims annually during Arbaeen, the 40-day mourning period following Husayn's martyrdom.

Transport
No functioning airport yet; arrive by bus from cities across Iraq or by train from Baghdad/Basra (1-2 weekly). Downtown shrine area is vehicle-free within 1.5 km.
