Overview

Kalundborg is a modest harbour town of around 17,000 on western Zealand, best known for its unusual five-towered Church of Our Lady built around 1220 in Greek cross layout—a medieval oddity few Danish cities can claim. The nearby Røsnæs Peninsula offers dramatic coastline, dolmens from the Stone Age, a working Dutch gallery mill, and the 1844 Røsnæs Lighthouse at the tip.

Before you go

Accommodation

Budget options include the Kalundborg Youth Hostel (dorm kr 180, private from kr 520), several B&Bs from kr 200-425, and multiple campgrounds on Røsnæs Peninsula charging kr 30-65 per adult.

Food

Kalundborg has limited restaurant options, mostly clustered around the harbour and Røsnæs Peninsula. Many rural eateries like Røsnæs Kro close entirely during winter (November-March). Self-catering is the most reliable option for budget travellers.

Money

Denmark uses the Danish Krone (DKK). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted even in small shops; however, some budget B&Bs and campgrounds may prefer cash. ATMs are available in central Kalundborg near the harbour and along main streets.

Transport

Local buses run infrequently (up to twice hourly) and schedules are sparse on weekends. Train connections to Copenhagen and western Denmark are reliable via Kalundborg station. Cycling is practical for exploring the town and nearby Røsnæs Peninsula.

Weather

Kalundborg experiences temperate maritime weather with mild summers (15-22°C) and cold winters (0-5°C). Summer is the best time for outdoor activities; winter sees short days and many rural attractions closed.
