Overview
Joensuu ("River's mouth" in Finnish) sits where the Pielisjoki flows into Lake Pyhäselkä, making it the second largest city in Eastern Finland and capital of North Karelia. The city combines a 1848 grid-plan town center with Finnish Art Nouveau architecture by Eliel Saarinen, a strong university presence from the University of Eastern Finland, and deep roots in the forestry industry.
