Why Go?

Jacó is one of the two largest tourist towns on Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast, famous for its 4-km black sand beach and consistent surf breaks. It's the closest major beach destination to San José's Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO) — just 80 minutes via the Autopista del Sol highway. The town draws surfers, backpackers, and party crowds with its mix of surf shops, bars, restaurants, and affordable accommodations. A stop at the Tarcoles River bridge en route offers a guaranteed crocodile sighting.

Get In

Jacó lies about 130 km from San José's Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO). The scenic drive takes roughly 80 minutes along the Autopista del Sol highway. Several shuttle services operate this route: Daytrip Shuttle departs from Selina Hotel in downtown San José or the airport (morning 6:50AM/8:55AM, afternoon 2:35PM) starting at $20 USD per person. Paradise Shuttles offers shared rides for $30. Local buses (Transportes Jaco Ruta 655) run six times daily from San José to Jacó.

Get Around

Jacó is small enough to walk end-to-end, though taxis and Uber are plentiful. Official red taxis use meters (locally called "Maria"); standard fare is ₡1,500 colones anywhere in town or to Herradura, or ₡750 for short distances. Always ask drivers to use the meter. Local buses circulate hourly between Herradura and central Jacó (not the northern side), departing from near Mas por Menos grocery store. The official bus terminal for San José runs is at the north end, across from Best Western hotel; tickets can also be purchased online at Transportes Jaco Ruta 655. The Jacó-to-San José trip takes 3-4 hours.

See

Jacó's compact size lets you explore the entire town in a day, but several days allow deeper immersion into beach life, shopping, dining, and tours. An art tour showcases large and small murals painted throughout town. A scenic drive along the Costanera (Western Costa Rica coastline) reveals private beaches and photo opportunities. For views, locals can direct you to "El Muro" — an abandoned hilltop structure accessible only by foot or mountain bike overlooking southern Jacó. The Mono Azul sloth rescue project, sponsored by Kids Saving the Rainforest, is located south of Jacó toward Manuel Antonio.

Do

Surfing and boogie boarding are the main draws; Jacó is considered one of the best beginner surf spots in Costa Rica thanks to beach breaks with sand bottoms and good waves during high tides. Multiple surf camps and schools operate along the main strip — choose ISA-certified instructors for quality assurance. Board rentals are inexpensive for full-day use. Nearby Herradura (north) offers a quieter cove-style beach (note: crocodiles occasionally swim in due to river inflow). Playa Blanca, accessible via a bumpy road through Punta Leona Resort, features rare white sand instead of black. Adventurous types can try deep-sea fishing charters (Costa Rica Fishing Experts), stand-up paddleboarding at Surf Synergy Academy, or golf at Los Sueños Marriott resort. Language learners can enroll at Academia Tica Spanish School on Calle Naciones Unidas.

Buy

Small shops and stalls line Jacó's main strip paralleling the beach, selling jewelry, fabric, surfwear, crafts, and traditional Costa Rican souvenirs. For higher-quality items, visit TICO POD (art and gifts) or Fruity Monkey Pop (coffee drinks and beans). Bohio Coffee on the main street offers a pleasant spot for sit-down coffee. Haircuts run about ₡5,000 at places like Tony's or Medrano.

Eat and Drink

Jacó offers diverse dining: Jacó Rustico serves generous cafeteria-style local plates for ₡3,000 including a drink. Isaga Bar-Restaurant (across from Beatle Bar) earns praise for seafood, steaks, and bocas (appetizer-sized dishes). Sunrise Breakfast opens 6AM-1PM and 6PM-6AM for American-style breakfasts around $6. Tsunami Sushi features half-off sushi rolls on Wednesdays 6PM-9PM. For international flavors, Lemon Zest offers fine dining (US$15-18 per plate) and Hola India serves curries for $13. Nightlife centers on venues like Los Amigos Sportsbar (45+ beers, seven TVs), Le Loft (official after-party spot with DJs), Green Room (live music and local brews), and Republik Lounge (EDM/Reggaeton club). The Backyard Bar in Playa Hermosa provides a mellow surfer vibe contrasting Jacó's rowdier bars.

Stay Safe

Buses are common targets for thieves and pickpockets — keep valuables in sight inside the bus, not just in under-seat storage. Avoid pirate taxis; only use official-looking red cabs with meters. Crocodiles inhabit the Tarcoles River (feeding them is illegal and strictly prohibited). At Herradura beach, crocodiles sometimes swim into the bay; exercise caution when swimming. Playa Hermosa's powerful riptides and large waves have caused fatalities — only experienced swimmers should enter the water there. The black sand beaches become scorching hot at midday and can burn bare feet.

Go Next

Manuel Antonio National Park lies about an hour south along the Costanera highway (winding through Quepos). The park contains 6-7 secluded white-sand beaches; watch for tide changes and wild monkeys (do not feed them). Playa Hermosa, a world-class surfing beach, is just 5 minutes south of Jacó but demands respect for its dangerous conditions. Esterillos is another beach town 30 minutes south. Northbound, Herradura offers a quieter cove beach.
