Why Go

İznik is a quiet market town on Lake İznik that was once ancient Nicaea, a major cultural centre of the Roman and Byzantine worlds. The town preserves 3 km of Roman walls with four gates, and was the site of the First Ecumenical Council in 325 AD where the Nicene Creed was formulated. Today it offers a relaxed atmosphere, tile workshops reviving a 16th-century ceramic tradition, and lakeside swimming away from mass tourism.

Getting In

İznik is accessed via bus from Bursa (about 1.5 hours, approximately 50 TL), with minibuses departing from the Bursa terminal. From Istanbul, you typically change buses in Bursa or Gemlik. The town is on the D150 highway; driving from Bursa takes roughly an hour. The Ottoman village was described as a "wretched village of long lanes and mud walls" in 1797, meaning the ancient layout was preserved.

Getting Around

The going is level, and all the gates – the most distant points of the town – are about 1 km from the central square, so everything is walkable. Taxis wait near Hagia Sophia: İznik Taksi (+90 224 757 3737), İznik Terminal Taksi (+90 552 207 9177), and Merkez Taksi (+90 224 757 5164).

When To Go

Summers are hot with daytime temperatures averaging almost 30°C, and İznik is drier than Bursa during summer with only 2-3 days of rain per month. Winters are cool to chilly with rain and sporadic snow, daily highs averaging around 10°C. Spring (except March) and fall are both mild and good times to visit, especially as İznik doesn't get soaked by the Anatolian storm season that brings heavy showers further south.

Where To Stay

Accommodation ranges from basic central hotels to lakeside options. Hotel Aydın (Kılıçarslan Cd 64) is basic but clean with en-suite bathrooms, air-con, wifi, and satellite TV. Çamlık Motel on the lake shore offers rooms at 45-80 TL for single/double including breakfast. Budget travelers can find basic guesthouses around the clocktower area.

Food And Drink

Köfteci Yusuf on Atatürk Cd 73 (Daily 07:00-01:00) is a popular chain restaurant 3 blocks south of the clocktower with reliable Turkish fare and an open-air terrace. Karçiçeği at Kılıçaslan Cd 54 offers good value central dining (Daily 09:00-23:00). For fish, Umut Restaurant on the waterfront 500 m north of Lake Gate specializes in local catfish and carp. Few town cafes serve alcohol; try the hotel restaurants for drinks.

Things To Do

Hagia Sophia (Kılıçaslan Cd 163, Free) is a redbrick Byzantine basilica of 1065 AD with later Ottoman conversions. The Green Mosque (Yeşil Camii, Free), built in the 1380s, has an impressive 25 m minaret covered with green-turquoise-blue mosaics. Swim in Lake İznik – waters are reasonably clean and pleasant in summer with multiple access points along the waterfront. The Wednesday market in streets east of the clocktower offers fresh produce.

Buy

Wednesday market day brings fresh fruit, veg, and local produce to streets east of the clocktower. Banks with ATMs are near the clocktower on Atatürk Cd or Kılıçaslan Cd. Supermarkets include BİM, Dia, Migros, and Şok with branches throughout the central area. Tiles (çini) and ceramics were an İznik tradition from 1490-1620; the industry was revived in the 1990s with dozens of workshops along Kılıçaslan Cd. Gül Çini Takı at Kılıçarslan Cd 159 is a good value souvenir shop (Daily 09:00-19:00).
