Why Go

Iringa sits at 1,600 m on a cliff overlooking the Little Ruaha River valley, offering a cool highland climate and attractive bluff-top setting. Built by the Germans in the late 19th century as a bastion against the Hehe people, it combines colonial architecture with vibrant local culture. It's a much nicer stop than Morogoro when traveling between Dar es Salaam and the Southern Highlands or onward to Malawi and Zambia.

Getting In

Buses connect Iringa from Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mbeya. Recommended bus companies include ABC, Al Saedy, Deluxe, and Chaula. The road from Dar is being upgraded into a good road with beautiful scenery passing through national park. Sumry, Sutco, and Upendo have morning departures to Dar around 8AM, while Chaula runs the best service towards Mbeya with 2 buses leaving every morning.

Getting Around

Local transport is primarily via daladalas (shared minibuses). The daladala stand near the market is a hub for reaching nearby attractions. Taxis are also available for destinations like Isimila Stone Age Site, about 15 km from town.

When To Go

Iringa's highland climate means it is cooler than the coast year-round. The dry season (June-October) is best for wildlife viewing at Ruaha National Park. The town itself is walkable and pleasant in all seasons, though the cool evenings can be bracing at 1,600 m altitude.
