Overview

Iqaluit (ᐃᖃᓗᐃᑦ, "place of many fish" in Inuktitut) is Nunavut's capital and only real settlement of scale—a town of 7,700 where pickup trucks share gravel roads with arctic foxes and the Northern Lights crackle overhead in winter. It's not cheap (expect Toronto-level hotel rates in a place where everything is flown in), but for travelers who want raw Arctic wilderness with actual restaurants, galleries, and a brewery, Iqaluit delivers something no southern city can: backcountry access a short boat ride from a microbrewery.

Before you go

Accommodation

Hotels run $240-475/night. Budget options are scarce—college residence when school is out, camping, or couch surfing. Book well ahead.

Alcohol

Unlike many Nunavut communities, Iqaluit allows alcohol. The beer and wine store is on Niuraivik (Tu-Sa noon-7PM). Nu Brew microbrewery opened 2018.

Connectivity

Ice Wireless (3G GSM) and Bell (4G/LTE) are the main options. Rogers customers can roam on Ice Wireless for voice only. Speeds are slower than southern Canada.

Culture

Iqaluit is an Inuit community—Inuktitut is spoken alongside English. Respect local customs, dress modestly, and ask before photographing people.

Money

All prices are in Canadian dollars. Credit cards widely accepted at hotels and restaurants; cash still needed for taxis, small shops, and some cafes. No ATMs specific to Iqaluit mentioned in article, plan accordingly.

Safety

Low violent crime, but remote location means limited medical services. Qikiqtani General Hospital handles emergencies; serious cases require evacuation south.

Transport

Iqaluit has no road connections—everything in and out is by air. Taxis cost $9.50/person flat rate. Iqaluit Transit covers airport-Apex runs for $5/adult.

Weather

Summers brief and cool (June-August, up to 12°C). Winters long and dark (December-February: -22°C average, minimal daylight). Best aurora viewing January-February; best outdoor access July-August.
