Why Go?

Iloilo City is a hidden gem in the Visayas, offering a rare combination of well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, world-class Ilonggo cuisine, and a genuinely welcoming local culture. As a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, it stands apart from other Philippine destinations with signature dishes like La Paz Batchoy and Pancit Molo that originated here. The city lacks the tourist saturation of Cebu or Boracay, letting visitors experience authentic Filipino daily life in clean, safe streets. Historic Calle Real and the surrounding heritage districts reward those who explore on foot, while nearby Guimaras island and Southern Iloilo's centuries-old churches make excellent day trips.

Getting In

Iloilo International Airport (IATA: ILO) handles direct flights from Manila (about 1 hour) and Cebu, with international connections via Clark. Parola Wharf and Lapuz Wharf serve the Guimaras ferry, while Fort San Pedro Terminal handles inter-island vessels. Ceres buses and vans depart from Tagbak Integrated Terminal for destinations north toward Roxas City and the Capiz border. Local jeepneys and UV Express vans connect the city proper with surrounding districts.

Getting Around

Jeepneys are the backbone of Iloilo's public transport, costing 8-12 PHP per ride on fixed routes throughout the city and nearby towns. Tricycles (motorcycle with sidecar) serve shorter routes and areas jeepneys cannot reach, typically 20-50 PHP depending on distance. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Grab are available in the Mandurriao business district. The Iloilo River Esplanade is walkable and connects several downtown attractions. Most heritage sites in the city proper and Jaro are within walking distance of each other.

When to Go

The dry season from December to May offers the best weather for sightseeing, with daytime highs of 29-33°C. The Dinagyang Festival in January features vibrant street dancing and religious processions honoring the Santo Niño. April's Holy Week brings unique religious traditions including processions through the city streets. June to November is wet season, with August and September seeing the heaviest rainfall (313-364 mm monthly), though prices for accommodations may be lower and crowds thinner.

Where to Stay

Mandurriao district near SM City Iloilo and Festive Walk offers the widest range of accommodations from budget inns to international chains like Courtyard by Marriott and Park Inn, with easy access to restaurants and nightlife. The historic downtown around Calle Real and Plaza Libertad suits heritage-focused travelers, with options like Hotel Madia-as on the heritage street itself. Budget travelers can find fan rooms at family pension houses on General Luna Street from 500-700 PHP, while mid-range hotels with air-conditioning average 1000-2000 PHP per night.

Food and Drink

Iloilo's culinary reputation centers on La Paz Batchoy, a pork broth noodle soup topped with crushed chicharon and egg, best sampled at Ted's, Deco's, or Netong's at La Paz Public Market. Pancit Molo, pork-filled dumplings in broth, originated in the Molo district and is famously served at Kap Ising's. Villa Beach in Arevalo offers open-air seafood restaurants with same-day catch, while Smallville Business Complex in Mandurriao clusters numerous bars and restaurants along the riverside boardwalk. Calle Real's heritage buildings house small eateries serving Ilonggo snacks and pastries, including the giant Queen Siopao at a local favorite spot.

Things to Do

Heritage enthusiasts should visit Molo Church (known as the feminist church for its 16 female saint statues), Jaro Cathedral with its iconic belfry, and the neoclassical buildings along Calle Real including the Eusebio Villanueva Building. Museums worth visiting include Museo Iloilo (50 PHP), the National Museum Western Visayas (free) in the former provincial jail, and ILOMOCA for contemporary art (150 PHP). The Iloilo River Esplanade offers evening strolls along the water. Families can cool off at WaterWorld Iloilo waterpark in Jaro or El Dorado Waterpark in Mandurriao.

Safety

Iloilo City ranks among the safest Philippine cities for travelers, with a generally relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals. Petty crimes like pickpocketing are rare but can occur in crowded jeepneys and public markets, so keep belongings secure. Traffic can be chaotic during rush hours on Diversion Road and city proper intersections. Most areas are well-lit and safe to walk at night, particularly in the Mandurriao business district, though quiet side streets should be avoided after dark.

SIM cards are readily available at the airport, malls, and convenience stores for 50-500 PHP depending on data allocation. Free WiFi is common in hotels, cafes, and public spaces. The international country code is +63, with Iloilo City area code 33. Power outlets use Type F (two-pin) plugs, the same as in many Western devices.
