Overview
Herculaneum is a more intimate alternative to Pompeii, with remarkably preserved buildings including upper stories still intact. The six flows of boiling mud that buried the city created an airtight seal, preserving frescoes, mosaics, and even carbonized wood.

Before you go
Food
Bring food and water to the site as options are limited. Pizza and cake shops are available on the approach from the station.
Money
Admission is €16 (EU citizens under 18 pay €2, free with Campania Artecard). Bring euros as the site accepts standard payment.
Packing
Lockers available for larger bags. Comfortable shoes recommended for walking the uneven ancient streets.
Safety
The excavations are in an area of some economic deprivation; watch your belongings and be aware of your surroundings.
Transport
Take the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Naples to Ercolano Scavi station. The excavations are a short walk from the station.
