Overview
Herat is the third largest city in Afghanistan and one of its wealthier provinces, located close to the Iranian border. Known as the 'Diamond of Asia' in some literature, the city has over 3,000 years of history and was rebuilt many times after destruction, most notably by Tamerlane in the 1300s.

Herat is relatively safer than other Afghan provinces but security incidents occur. Get current travel advisories before visiting. Avoid overland routes through Helmand and Farah provinces.
Transport
Herat International Airport is 15 km south with daily flights to Kabul. Buses run from Mashhad, Iran. Local transport relies on taxis and walking.
Weather
Summers are hot (35-37°C June-August) with no rainfall. Winters are cold (-3°C January). Spring offers mild temperatures ideal for sightseeing.
