Overview
Hartz Mountains National Park sits at the southern edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, offering dramatic glacial landscapes just over an hour's drive from Hobart. Before you go
Accommodation
No camping or lodging in the park. Base yourself in Hobart or Huonville. Arve Road is closed in heavy snow—check conditions before setting out.
Packing
Layers are essential regardless of season. In winter add waterproof boots, chains, and emergency supplies. The alpine environment can change quickly.
Safety
No rangers on site. Bring chains in winter. Avoid night driving due to wildlife. Boardwalks get icy in cold months—watch your step.
Transport
Car is essential—there's no public transport. From Hobart, take A6 Huon Highway to Geeveston, then C632 Arve Road. The last 14 km is unsealed gravel.
Weather
Cool alpine climate year-round; rarely exceeds 20°C even in summer. Winters are cold with frequent snow; temperatures drop below freezing most winter days.
