Overview
Guazhou is a remote county in western Gansu Province along the historic Silk Road, offering access to UNESCO-listed Suoyang City Ruins and the spectacular Yulin Caves with their 7th-14th century polychrome statues and wall paintings. The area is deeply connected to the legendary monk Xuanzang, who is said to have preached at Ta'er Temple before beginning his pilgrimage to India—the inspiration for Journey to the West.
