Overview

Great Otway National Park protects one of Victoria's last substantial tracts of temperate rainforest, with ancient myrtle beech and mountain ash towering over fern-lined gullies. The park spans 40 km east to west along the Great Ocean Road, offering coastal lookouts, hidden waterfalls, and the tallest flowering trees in Australia.

Connectivity

Mobile coverage is limited and unreliable throughout most of the park. Apollo Bay and Lorne have basic connectivity. Plan for disconnection when exploring trail areas.

Fire safety

Severe fire risk exists in summer months. Check conditions and Parks Victoria fire alerts before traveling. Avoid park on Total Fire Ban days. Carry water and know exit routes.

No food available within the park. Nearest dining in Lorne (west) or Apollo Bay (east). Carry supplies for day trips and remote exploration.

Money

ATMs available in Apollo Bay and Lorne. Most park attractions are free. Paid activities include Otway Fly (approximately AUD 35-45 per person). Camping costs around AUD 25-40 per night.

Transport

A private vehicle is essential for exploring this park. The Great Ocean Road (B100) is the main access route, with no internal public transport available. Weekly bus service between Colac and Apollo Bay operates but is impractical for park exploration.

Temperate coastal climate with average maxima of 23°C at Apollo Bay and 28°C inland. Rainfall around 1,000 mm annually, heaviest from May to September. Summer brings fire risk; winter brings dramatic waterfalls but wet trails.
