Gokarna is a small pilgrimage town on the coast in Karnataka, India. It's a conservative Hindu pilgrimage town, home to several temples and festivals. Most foreign tourists come to stay on one of the 4 beaches just south of town: Kudlee, Om, Half Moon, and Paradise.

Getting in
Gokarna is accessible by train at Gokarna Road railway station, 9 km from town. Auto rickshaws charge ₹120-200. Buses arrive and depart from the KSRTC bus stand. Direct buses to Karwar at 7:30 & 10:30 AM. The train to Karwar costs ₹9 and takes about 45 minutes.

Getting around
The town centre is walkable. To reach the beaches south of town, you can walk the coastal trail: 20 minutes from Gokarna beach to Kudle, another 20 to Om, then 20 to Half Moon, then 20 to Paradise. Rickshaws to Om Beach cost around ₹200-250. Only Gokarna and Om Beach are accessible by road.

When to go
The most popular time to visit Gokarna is during the 4-day Shiva Ratri festival, when 20,000 pilgrims descend. Beaches are busiest from November to February. During the monsoon off-season, beaches are deserted and many shacks are closed.

Where to stay
Accommodation ranges from basic dorm rooms at Hotel Ram (₹60 with common bath) to mid-range resorts at Om Beach (₹1500+). Most backpackers stay at beachside guesthouses on Kudle or Om Beach, with prices from ₹200-500 per night. Book in advance during peak season (Nov-Mar).

Food and drink
Local restaurants serve cheap all-you-can-eat thalis. Street food includes fried pies and bhel puri. Fish (pomfret, kingfish) is popular. Beer costs around ₹240 for Kingfisher at Om Beach guesthouses. Fresh coconuts and lassis are widely available. Avoid tap water; buy bottled water.

Things to do
Visit the Maha Ganapati Temple and Mahabaleshvara Temple in town. Explore the four southern beaches: Kudle, Om (shaped like the Om symbol), Half Moon, and Paradise. Walk the coastal trail between beaches. During Shiva Ratri, witness the chariot processions on main street.

Safety
Gokarna is a conservative pilgrimage town; maintain respectful behavior. Avoid public alcohol consumption in town; drink only at your guesthouse on the beaches. Cannabis use is illegal and locals may report you; police do not accept bribes, especially during Shiva Ratri. Strong waves at Paradise Beach make swimming dangerous.
