Overview

Gelnhausen is a small historic town in Hesse with about 24,000 inhabitants, situated roughly 50 km east of Frankfurt and 50 km west of Fulda. The town preserves medieval character with its red-sandstone buildings lining Obermarkt square and the ruins of the Kaiserpfalz imperial palace founded by Frederick Barbarossa in 1170.

Outdoor swimming available May-September at Barbarossafreibad (adult €4). Indoor pool has varying daily hours. The Kinzigtal total cycling event attracts participants.

Gelnhausen offers surprisingly varied dining including Hessian specialties at Blockhaus and Italian at Sardina. Local apple wine (Ebbelwei) is widely available.
