Why go?
Gävle is a port city on the Baltic Sea in Gävleborg County, the southernmost part of Norrland, with a population of 79,004. Founded in 1413 and chartered in 1446, it was Norrland's first and only city during the Middle Ages. The city is famous for the Gävle Goat, a giant straw structure erected each December since 1966, which has become a beloved tradition despite numerous attempts to burn it down. The surrounding countryside features historic ironworks villages like Forsbacka, while Mackmyra Whisky Distillery offers Swedish whiskey tastings nearby.

The station has rail connections to Stockholm (approximately 1.5 hours), Uppsala (40 minutes), and Sundsvall to the north. Long-distance buses stop at Gävle Bro. The nearest major airport is Stockholm Arlanda, approximately 160 km south.

Getting around
Walking covers most of the city centre; the railway station to the river park is just over 1 km. There is no bike hire, but repairs are available at Posa Cykel on Norra Köpmangatan 4 (M-F). Local buses run from the station and Rådhustorget main square via X-trafik. Bus 1 runs every 15 minutes to Valbo shopping centre, Bus 41 every 20 minutes to Sandviken, and Bus 49 every 2 hours to Hedesunda. Taxis are reliable with drivers speaking good English from operators like Fast Pris (+46 26 165000) and Gävle Stad Taxi (+46 26 100880).

When to go
Gävle has a boreal climate with sharp seasonal extremes. Summer (June-August) is pleasant with temperatures reaching 19-22°C and sunset well past 10 pm, creating 'white nights.' Winters are harsh with temperatures dropping to -7°C and sunset before 3 pm, with snow from mid-December through February. The Christmas season (late November to December) brings the famous Gävle Goat tradition and festive markets. Summer is ideal for outdoor activities like canoeing and fishing, while winter offers ice hockey matches and cross-country skiing.

Safety
Gävle is generally a safe city, with main risk factors being petty theft and nightlife brawls. As in most of Sweden, cold weather brings dangers including winter driving hazards, ice safety, and snow safety. Animal collisions are a risk, particularly with moose, deer, and boar. The countryside is highly infested by mosquitoes and ticks during summer. Although burning the Gävle Goat has become a tradition, it remains illegal and criminal charges will be pressed if caught.
