Overview

Gansbaai (Goose Bay) is a small fishing village 165 km southeast of Cape Town that has grown into the Great White Capital of the World. The town itself is modest, but the surrounding ocean and landscapes offer exceptional outdoor activities: shark cage diving, whale watching, fynbos botanical walks, and visits to historic Moravian mission villages.

No hotels exist in the area. Book guesthouses well ahead during peak season (June-August). Options range from budget farm-stays (De Uijlenes) to luxury lodges (Grootbos). Most properties require 1-2 night minimum stays.

Activities

Shark cage diving is the main attraction (R1250). Book operators like Great White Shark Tours or Marine Dynamics in advance. Peak season June-August. Whale watching from De Kelders cliffs June-November.

Food

Fresh fish and crayfish are local specialties. Baardies Food Wine Art in Baardskeerdersbos is highly rated. For dining variety, drive to Stanford (24 km) which has several quality restaurants.

Money

South African Rand (ZAR) is used. Credit cards accepted at guesthouses and tour operators. Cash preferred at local markets and some restaurants. ATM available in Gansbaai town center on Main Street.

Transport

Renting a car is essential for exploring Gansbaai and surrounding villages. The R43 connects Gansbaai to Hermanus, Stanford, and Cape Agulhas. From Cape Town, take N2 then R43 (2 hours, 165 km).
