Overview

Freeport is the second-largest city in The Bahamas, built as a free trade zone on Grand Bahama. While less touristy than Nassau, it offers white-sand beaches, world-class diving including shark encounters, and access to one of the world's largest underwater cave systems.

Freeport has no budget accommodations; all hotels are 4-5 star resorts. Book well in advance, especially during high season.

Activities

World-class diving and snorkeling; shark dives popular. Multiple beaches from popular (Our Lucaya) to secluded (Gold Rock Beach).

Food

Port Lucaya Market offers the cheapest eats with hamburgers around $5. Decent lunches cost approximately $20. International cuisine available.

Money

The Bahamas uses US dollars. Expect prices 10-15% higher than mainland USA. Paying cash may allow you to avoid sales tax.

Safety

Generally safe but Hurricane Dorian damage from 2019 still visible. Standard water safety for ocean activities.

Transport

Taxis negotiate flat rates before trips. Rental cars available but road maps may include unfinished roads. Tour buses and water taxis available.

Tropical climate year-round with temperatures around 27°C (80°F). Hurricanes possible June-November. Best weather November-April.
