Formentera is the smallest and southernmost of Spain's Balearic Islands, offering flat sandy terrain with magnificent unspoilt beaches. The island draws huge numbers in July-August but remains quieter than its neighbour Ibiza.

Before you go
Accommodation
Small one- and two-star hotels and apartments. Camping forbidden. Book well ahead for July-August. No high-rise buildings.
Language
Catalan dialect 'formenterenq' is main language, but everyone speaks Castilian Spanish. Italian widely understood.
Safety
Very little crime. Watch for drunk drivers on roads after dark. Keep valuables safe.
Season
Peak July-August with Italian tourists. Quieter May-June and September-October offer better atmosphere.
Transport
No airport—access via ferry from Ibiza (30 min, €17-24) or direct from Denia in summer. Buses cost €1-2 anywhere on the island.
