Before you go
Health
Doctor's medical certificate required for canyon hike (paper forms only at Hobas). River water is often too salty to drink—always purify. Heat exhaustion risk even in winter.
Money
Namibian Dollar (N$) pegged 1:1 to South African Rand. Cash preferred at park gates and small establishments. Credit cards may work at lodges but not at Hobas office.
Packing
Bring trekking poles, water purification tablets, at least 2L water capacity, and all food. No facilities or shops exist between Hobas and Ai-Ais. Cooker essential as wood fires prohibited.
Safety
Extreme remoteness is the primary risk—no mobile coverage, no emergency services nearby. Minimum 3-person groups required for canyon hike. Always tell someone your plans before entering.
Transport
Self-drive is essential; no public transport serves the canyon. Drive to Hobas (north entrance) or Ai-Ais (south) via gravel roads. Car rental recommended from Windhoek or coastal towns.
