Overview
Enontekiö is a vast, sparsely populated municipality in north-western Finnish Lapland, covering over 8,000 km² with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. The region includes part of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, all peaks exceeding 1,000 m in Finland, and wide areas above the tree line.

Few hotels, many cottages by rivers. Camping in wilderness areas permitted except in national parks and nature reserves. Book huts through visitor centres.
Language
Bilingual municipality with Finnish and Northern Sámi both having official status. English commonly spoken in tourist areas.
Money
Finland uses Euro (EUR). Cash and card widely accepted in shops and hotels. Remote areas may have limited card facilities.
Safety
Generally very safe region. Wilderness travel requires proper equipment and experience. Watch for wetlands when trekking near highways.
Transport
National road 21 (E8) is the main route; challenging in winter with frequent lorry incidents. Coaches run once or twice daily from Rovaniemi. Shared taxis available by pre-booking.
Weather
Midnight sun from mid-May to mid-July; polar night from late November to mid-January. Northern lights visible approximately 3 in 4 winter nights. Wide areas above the tree line experience harsh conditions.
