Why Go
Elbasan is a key transit city in central Albania, positioned on the Shkumbin River and colloquially known as the Bellybutton of Albania (Kërthiza e Shqipërisë). All travelers from Tirana or other parts of Albania must pass through Elbasan to reach North Macedonia via the Qafë-Thana border crossing. The city offers a quieter alternative to Tirana with budget accommodation, traditional street food like the unique bugaçe breakfast roll, and access to thermal baths at Llixhat.

When to Go
Summer Day (Veriu) is the most significant local celebration, when all Elbasan residents organize picnics at Bysheku, a tourist spot 5 km from the city, featuring celebrations and traditional food. The summer months (June-August) offer the best weather for outdoor activities and visiting the Valësh Canyon.

Food and Drink
Elbasan has several unique culinary specialities not found elsewhere in Albania. Bugaçe (50-100 lekë) is a traditional breakfast roll smeared in butter with salt, found only in Elbasan. Ballakume is a large sugar biscuit, best freshly baked warm, traditionally eaten during Summer Day. Tavë Elbasani me kumbulla (350 lek) features goat meat, garlic, onion, rice, and sour plums. Byrek me mish dhe me gjizë costs 50 lek. Traditional drinks include Bozë (150 lek), made of corn flour, yogurt, and yeast, and Lëng thane, a cornelian cherry syrup diluted with water.

Things to Do
The 2,000-year-old Elbasan Castle is a Roman construction dating to the 3rd century BC, featuring cobblestone streets, the sahati (clock tower), and an excellent restaurant. Visitors can stroll down the wide brick boulevard where residents gather for nightly walks after dusk. The Elbasan Ethnographic Museum is housed in a traditional 18th-century house. Nearby, the Valësh Canyon features a 22-meter-high waterfall estimated at over 300 years old, accessible in the Gjinar area 24 km from Elbasan. Rafting on the Shkumbin River costs €20 per person with departures at 09:00-12:00. The Llixhat thermal baths offer hot waters at 60°C and higher, reachable by bus for 50 lek from St. Bashkia stop.

Connectivity
Wireless Internet is widely available in cafés and restaurants throughout the city, though it's advisable to ask before sitting down. Free public WiFi is available around the city through Albtelecom. Mobile providers offer 3G, 4G, and 5G internet. Several private phone calling shops with long-distance calling services are available.

Safety
Elbasan is generally considered safe for travelers, though standard urban precautions apply. The city is a major transit hub, so remain vigilant with belongings at bus stations and during intercity travel. The Kozani-8 thermal baths along the Tirana-Elbasan highway have poorly maintained facilities despite their proximity to the main road.

From Elbasan, direct buses leave from the Llixhat spa center to Pristina, Kosovo (€10 one way, departures at 04:00 and 14:00), also passing through Prizren. Nearby destinations include Berat (city of 1001 windows with its castle and Osum Canyon), Korçë (cultural capital with Moravia Mountain hiking), Pogradec (lake town on Lake Ohrid), Durrës (ancient city with the Balkans' largest amphitheater), and Përmet (City of Roses with thermal springs in the Vjosa River Valley). For shorter trips, Sopot is a small mountain region in the northeast.

Buy
Elbasan is famous for its olive oil, produced in the surrounding sun-soaked hills with centuries-old traditions. Visitors can purchase high-quality extra virgin olive oil directly from local farmers or small processing facilities (fabrika vaji) in surrounding villages. Look for shops near the city center and close to Scampa theatre. Traditional costumes (veshje popullore) are available near the Arena stadium.
