Before you go
Accommodation
Camping prohibited. Casa Cubuy eco-lodge is the only accommodation in the area.
Fees
No entrance fees for the forest. El Portal Visitor Center costs $4 per person. Guided tours cost a $5 donation.
Food
No restaurants inside the forest. Bring food and snacks. Restaurants available at the foot of the rainforest.
Packing
Bring bathing suit, towel, sunblock, insect repellent, and sturdy shoes with ankle support.
Safety
Trails are steep and wet. Watch for giant stinging nettle (ortiga). No dangerous large wildlife present.
Transport
A rental car is strongly recommended. The drive from San Juan takes about an hour via Route 3 east, then Route 191 through Palmer in Río Grande.
Weather
The forest receives up to 240 inches of rain per year. Weather changes rapidly in the mountains. If you see clouds at the top, it will rain.
