Overview
El Boqueron National Park is El Salvador's most visited national park, offering a rare opportunity to hike to the rim of an active stratovolcano just 17 km from the capital. The park's centerpiece is the enormous El Boqueron crater, 5 km in diameter and 558 meters deep, formed by an eruption about 800 years ago.

Before you go
Fees
Park entrance costs US$2 for foreign visitors, US$1 for Salvadorans. Children under 6 and seniors over 60 enter free. Open daily 08:00-17:00.
Hiking
Wear sturdy boots. Trails are well marked and in excellent condition. Main trail takes about 30 minutes to the summit. Rim trail and descent trail also available.
Parking
Limited parking inside the park. Locals may offer to watch your car for a fee. Consider arriving early on weekends.
Safety
The San Salvador Volcano is an active stratovolcano classified as a decade volcano due to its proximity to major population centers. Check for any current advisories before visiting.
Transport
Reachable by Uber or taxi from San Salvador (30-40 minutes, about 17 km). Follow Lib 10N then Lib 33W to the park entrance.
Water
Bring your own water. There are sources in the park but most hikers prefer to carry sufficient supplies for the hike.
