Devonport is Tasmania's primary ferry gateway, serving the daily Bass Strait crossing from Melbourne aboard the Spirit of Tasmania. With a population of around 25,000, this compact city on the northwest coast offers pleasant beaches, the Mersey Bluff lighthouse, and acts as the closest arrival point to World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park—just an hour's drive away.

Book ahead on weekends and especially during December to February peak season when all available beds can be pre-sold.
Day trips
Cradle Mountain is about one hour's drive from Devonport and makes an excellent day trip from the city.

Strait Off The Boat on Forbes Street is the local favorite for fresh seafood and fish and chips from $8.90.
Transport
The Spirit of Tasmania ferry is the main arrival route from Melbourne. Merseylink buses service the area but check timetables in advance as service is not frequent.
