Overview
Detmold was the capital of the petty Principality of Lippe, transformed into a republic in 1918 and merged into North Rhine-Westphalia in 1947. The city of some 74,000 inhabitants (2019) sits at the seat of East Westphalia and Lippe (OWL), equivalent to the Teutoburg Forest tourism region.

History
The city was capital of the Principality of Lippe, now part of North Rhine-Westphalia. The nearby Teutoburg Forest was site of the famous battle in 9 AD between Romans and Teutonic tribes.
Transport
Detmold has no intercity train connections. Regional trains run hourly from Herford (25 min), Bielefeld, Altenbeken (30 min), and Paderborn (40 min).
