Overview

Demre draws travelers as the site of ancient Myra, where St Nicholas served as bishop in the 4th century AD. His remains were stolen to Bari and Venice, but the legends of his generosity gave rise to Santa Claus, making Demre a pilgrimage site for families curious about the real Santa's origins.

Before you go

Hiking

The Lycian Way passes through Demre. For the Demre-to-Finike section, carry water and food as no facilities exist for 30 km. Best walked in spring or fall.

History

Demre's significance stems from St Nicholas, bishop of Myra in the 4th century. His legend inspired Santa Claus through a chain of translations: Sinterklaas (Dutch), Santa Claus (American). The town has embraced this heritage despite the saint's bones being in Italy.

Money

Turkey uses Turkish Lira (TRY). Cards accepted at larger hotels and some restaurants, but cash preferred at smaller establishments, markets, and dolmuşes. ATMs available in town.

Transport

Dolmuş minibuses run along D400 between Kaş, Demre, Finike and Kalkan. They depart when full from the Otogarı or main road. Taxis are available but not metered — agree on price before departing.

Visits

St Nicholas Church and Myra ruins are open daily with combined adult admission of 600 TL. Andriake is 90 TL. Most other ancient sites in the area are free to access. Morning visits are recommended to avoid midday heat.
