Before you go

Connectivity

Germany's mobile networks (Telekom, Vodafone, O2) provide good coverage throughout Cuxhaven. Free WiFi is available at most accommodations and some cafes.

Culture

Cuxhaven has a relaxed, traditional German seaside atmosphere. Fishing remains integral to local identity, and many festivals celebrate the maritime heritage. The town skews toward older visitors and families during peak season.

Money

Most shops and restaurants in Cuxhaven accept EC bank cards but rarely credit cards. Carry cash for smaller establishments and markets. ATMs are available near the train station and in the city center.

Safety

Wadden Sea tidal walks are popular but dangerous—never ignore tide times and stay within sight of shore. The Kurtaxe (tourist fee) is charged for beach access unless already included in your accommodation.

Transport

Cuxhaven is best explored on foot in the compact city center. Local buses serve outlying areas but run infrequently. Taxis are readily available at the train station. A car is only necessary for visiting attractions along the coast or the Aeronauticum museum.

Weather

Cuxhaven's coastal climate means frequent fog, mist, and strong winds. Even in summer, bring layers and rain gear. The best weather for beach activities occurs June through August.
