Overview

Custonaci is a small village between Monte Erice and the Monte Cofano coastline, best known for its cream-coloured marble quarries and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Custonaci — a 15th–16th century pilgrimage church at the heart of town. The surrounding landscape combines sea views, olive groves, and the Grotta Mangiapane prehistoric cave complex, making it a practical base for hikers, divers, and culture-seekers who want easy access to western Sicily's quieter corners.

Before you go

Accommodation

Book ahead in summer (July–August) when beach crowds and festivals fill accommodations quickly. Agriturismi offer rural character; baglio-villa stays provide a more immersive experience.

Etiquette

Dress modestly when visiting the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Custonaci — cover shoulders and knees. Sicilian villages appreciate polite greetings; a buongiorno when entering shops goes a long way.

Fish couscous is a local specialty; pane cunzato and cassatelle are regional items to seek out. Restaurants cluster around the main piazza and Cornino waterfront.

Money

Italy uses the euro (€). ATMs available in town; carry some cash for small shops and markets. Credit cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.
