Why go?
Como is a historic city at the southern end of Lake Como in Lombardy, Italy, with a population of 84,000. It borders Switzerland and was an important Roman crossroads. Birthplace of Pliny the Elder and Younger, and Alessandro Volta (inventor of the battery). Como was once famed for its silk industry. It offers a compact old town, a beautiful lakefront, and easy access to Lake Como's villages and the Alps.

Getting in
Como has three railway stations: Como San Giovanni (trains to Zurich, Lecco, and Milan), Como Lago (trains to Milan and Saronno), and Como Borghi (less useful). The bus station connects to local and regional destinations. The port offers ferries and hydrofoils to towns on Lake Como. The Funicolare goes from the center to Brunate. Como is about 40 km from Milan and lies on the Swiss border.
