Overview
Challakere is a working Indian town rather than a tourist destination, but it offers an authentic look at Karnataka's interior. Known as the "Oil City" or "second Mumbai" of Karnataka, the town has about 60 edible oil mills and is the second-largest producer of edible oil in India after Mumbai.

Language
Kannada is the local language. Hindi and some English are understood in commercial areas around the bus stations and Valmiki Circle.
Money
Challakere is a cash-based economy. Carry sufficient rupees from Chitradurga or use ATM there before heading to Challakere, as local ATM coverage may be limited.
Transport
Auto-rickshaws charge ₹40 for short trips. No local bus system exists. The nearest railway station and major bus terminal is in Chitradurga (35 km).
Weather
Visit October-March for comfortable temperatures (15-30°C). Summer (April-June) brings extreme heat exceeding 40°C, making daytime exploration difficult.
