Overview

Cayey is a college town of 42,000 people in central Puerto Rico's Sierra de Cayey mountains. It's most renowned across the island for its famous Guavate area—a stretch of PR-184 lined withlechoneras servinglechón (roasted whole pig).

Food

Guavate along PR-184 is the center of Cayey's food scene with over a dozenlechoneras serving roast pig. Most open daily with extended weekend hours. Lunch on weekends is busy with locals.

Nature

Carite State Forest offers hiking in the Sierra de Cayey mountains. Camping facilities remain closed since Hurricane Maria in 2017. Best visited during dry season December to April.

Transport

A car is essential in Cayey. Mountain roads have steep descents, hairpin turns, and unprotected cliff drops. PR-184 through Guavate connects to PR-52 for access from San Juan.
