Overview
Castleton is a compact village where you can stand in the main car park and see Peveril Castle keep looming overhead, with four show caves and Blue John (a semi-precious mineral found nowhere else on Earth) within walking distance of every pub. It's the classic Peak District walk-in base: you arrive, park, and everything — the castle, Peak Cavern, Cave Dale, Winnats Pass — is within a 20-minute stroll.

Before you go
Etiquette
The village sits within a National Park; follow the Countryside Code — take litter home, keep dogs on leads near livestock, and stay on marked paths across farmland.
Money
Castleton uses British Pounds (GBP). Most pubs, cafes, and shops accept card. Cash machines are available in the village. Budget for cave tickets at £8-9.25 per adult per site.
Safety
The cave tours involve steps and uneven underground paths; wear appropriate footwear. Winnats Pass road is narrow with steep gradients — drive carefully. Open Access Land around the pass offers remote walking; carry a map (Ordnance Survey Explorer OL1 Dark Peak).
Transport
Stagecoach buses run regularly between Castleton, Hope, and Sheffield (50 min). Train tickets to Hope Station are accepted on the connecting bus to Castleton. No western bus routes through Winnats Pass.
Weather
The Peak District weather is unpredictable. Pack layers and waterproofs even in summer. The old main road below Mam Tor is closed due to landslides; check conditions before heading out on high routes.
