Overview
Carrick-on-Shannon is County Leitrim's county town and main service centre, with a population of 4700 (2022). The town grew at a Shannon fording point; its Irish name Cora Droma Rúisc means "weir of the marshy ridge".

Trains from Dublin Connolly take 2 hr 20 min. Expressway Bus 23 from Dublin Busáras takes 3 hours. Local Link buses connect to Manorhamilton, Drumshanbo and other Leitrim villages.
Water
The Shannon and connected waterways offer boat hire, cruises, kayaking and paddleboarding. The Shannon Blueway provides riverside walking and cycling routes.
