Overview

Cape Breton Highlands National Park is the second largest Canadian national park in Atlantic Canada and the largest in the Maritime provinces, covering 948 km² on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It contains a significant portion of the Cabot Trail, a world-famous overland route offering dramatic coastal views, diverse hiking trails, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, kayaking, and whale watching.

Seafood, Acadian cuisine in Chéticamp. Restaurants seasonal (June–October). Groceries available in service towns.

Money

Cash and credit likely accepted at park gates, but alcohol only sold at Keltic Lodge. Grocery stores in Chéticamp and Ingonish.

Safety

Coyote encounters reported; follow advice at visitor centres. Black bears present. Share road with cyclists/motorcyclists.

Transport

Access by car only; Cabot Trail is narrow with steep grades. No public transport inside park. Bicycling popular but challenging.
