Overview
Cap-Haïtien is Haiti's second largest city with 275,000 residents, lying along a bay on the northern coast. During French colonial rule as Saint Domingue, it was the colony's capital called Cap Parisien or Cap Francais.

Health
Drink only bottled water. Use hand sanitizer before eating. Beach resorts like Cormier Plage offer fresh seafood including conch and lobster.
Language
French and Haitian Creole are the main languages. Some locals speak Spanish and English, especially in tourist areas.
Money
Local currency is the Gourde (G), though USD is widely accepted. There is no ATM at the airport. Departure tax of US$28 must be paid in cash.
Safety
Cap-Haïtien is the safest city in Haiti but standard Haiti travel precautions apply. Arrange hotel transport when possible.
Transport
The city is walkable. Taxis and motor-taxis are available. Tap-taps (colorful pickup trucks) serve routes including to Milot for G15.
