Why go?
Canberra is a slower, greener alternative to Sydney or Melbourne, offering free national museums, war memorials, and Parliament House tours, all set around Lake Burley Griffin. It's also a great base for mountain biking, bushwalking, and wine tasting in nearby cool-climate vineyards.
Getting in
Canberra Airport (CBR) has domestic flights from most Australian capitals. Buses (Murrays, Greyhound) run from Sydney (3.5 hr) and other cities, arriving at Jolimont Centre. Trains from Sydney (NSW TrainLink, 4 hr) arrive at Canberra Railway Station in Kingston.
Getting around
Renting a car is the most practical way to explore spread-out Canberra. Public buses (Transport Canberra) serve major attractions but are infrequent. Cycling is popular with dedicated paths around the lake and suburbs. Walking is only feasible in compact areas like Civic and the Parliamentary Triangle.
When to go
Late autumn (mid-April to May) offers the best weather – clear, mild days. Summer (Dec–Feb) can be hot (30-40°C) but dry. Winter (June–Aug) is cold (0-10°C) but sunny. Spring is changeable. The Floriade flower festival (Sept–Oct) and Canberra Balloon Spectacular (March) are highlights.
