Overview
Calheta is Madeira's premier beach destination, home to the only sandy beach on the island's south coast—artificially created by pouring sand from the Sahara into an artificial bay. The town serves as a gateway to the historic fishing villages of Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar, which hosted the 2001 World Surfing Championships.
